MEDICAL MASSAGE
You do not have to walk around in pain! Research has proven that therapeutic massage is effective in the reduction of muscle pain. Ask anyone who receives massages as part of their pain relief program.
In addition to the study of Swedish and Eastern techniques, N.Y.S. Massage therapists are required to study Medical Massage techniques.
Medical Massage is the term used when the primary focus of the session is rehabilitation of soft tissue after an injury. Various techniques are used to reduce adhesive scar tissue, relax tight and painful muscles and release trigger points. Medical Massage may be integrated into a Swedish or Shiatsu Massage.
A doctor’s note may be required after certain injuries.
SWEDISH
Swedish is the type of treatment most people think about when they want a massage. The therapist uses a variety of strokes and techniques to manipulate the soft tissue of the body. These techniques have a positive effect on the nerves, muscles, glands and circulatory system. The intent of Swedish massage is to enhance health and healing. During a Swedish session the client is comfortably draped and only the area of the body being worked on is exposed. Swedish Massage should be part of everyone’s health program.
SHIATSU
Shiatsu is a type of massage therapy that was developed in Japan and is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. It was further refined in the 1940s by Japanese practioner Tokujiro Namikoshi to include principles of western anatomy, physiology and pathology.
During a Shiatsu session the client is fully clothed and positioned on a mat or low table. The therapist applies pressure with fingers, thumbs, palms or knees along pressure points that follow specific patterns throughout the body.
Manipulation of these points reduces muscle tension, improves blood and lymph flow, stimulates the nervous system and releases endorphins. Assisted- stretches within the client's comfort range are also part of a Shiatsu Massage. Clients report an overall feeling of well-being due to the relaxation achieved during their session.
A Shiatsu session is not incorporated into a Swedish Massage; it is a separate modality that involves generalized relaxation and pain relief. Shiatsu is done quietly with focus, intent, and your general health in mind.
Please wear comfortable workout or yoga clothes and socks. You will have the option of having your session on the Shiatsu mat on the floor, or the table which will be placed lower than the typical massage session, although I recommend that you have your first session on the table.
New York State Massage Therapists are required to study Shiatsu techniques and theory, and must be knowledgeable enough to pass the NY State Licensing Exam.
